Self care in Winter
I love autumn and I love winter, but whilst the crisp morning walks, cosy jumpers and hot chocolates are great - it can be easy to get worn out with the pressure of all the christmas prep. My stress levels are certainly much higher than normal, as I try to finish off work projects, craft decorations and make plans for the holiday. So I have been thinking a lot about ways to implement a little self-care and help avoid the winter blues....
1. Keep things simple
Christmas is my favourite time of year, but it can be super easy to get caught up in the whole thing. The pressure of creating the 'perfect' christmas - the presents, the food, the decor. It can all get a bit much and sometimes I don't know when to stop. This year I have toned down my plans, remembering that the important thing is that we are together and I'm giving myself space to actually savour the season. I have simplified ideas for decorating our home, I have opted for a simple but delicious menu for Christmas lunch and there will be emphasis on making sure everyone has a great experience of christmas, not a giant pile of gifts.
2. Take time out
Finishing up work tasks before Christmas is super stressful - Once I have my biggest project out of the way, I plan to take an afternoon off work to do nothing. I might curl up and watch a film, go out for a coffee, or go for a long walk in the local countryside. It will be a step away from all the planning and creating and shopping.
3. Get outdoors
Shorter days mean less daylight and that can lead to a big case of the winter blues. Getting outside, even for 10 minutes can make a huge difference. I'm lucky that I have a dog, as it means I have t go out no matter what the weather is like. If you don't work from home you could take a stroll on your lunch break or walk to the office.
4. Drop the guilt
Want that peppermint hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows on top? Have it! Christmas is the time for a little indulgence - mince pies, christmas cookies, mulled wine.... the temptation is everywhere. I have decided that I am going to allow myself a few treats, without going crazy and I am not going to allow myself to feel guilty about a single one of them!
How about you? Do you have any tips for keeping sane and healthy throughout winter?
