How to make new habits stick
It's that time of year again - January 1st rolled round and you made your resolutions, set goals and felt fired up and motivated to make change. 12 days in and hopefully you are still on track, but I know for many of us, this is the point where we are most vulnerable to letting things slide. With that in mind, here are a few tips to help make your new habits stick...
1. Remember your why and reflect on how you want to feel
If you find your motivation waning or that voice in your head whispering "one chocolate biscuit won't hurt", pause and remember why you chose to to focus on your resolution or new habit in the first place. Whether you want to get fitter, lose weight or make a change to your career or relationship, write out a list of the benefits of achieving your goal. How will reaching your goal make you feel? Now write out a list of what you will lose out on if you don't get to where you want to be. What opportunities will you miss? How will things remain stagnant? How will you feel?
2. Remove temptations and distractions
What's tempting you or standing in your way? Maybe you want to give up sugar - make sure any temptation is removed from your kitchen cupboards. Looking to be more productive at work? Take a break from social media or limit checking your inbox to twice a day (the world won't end, I promise you).
3. Get a support squad
Having someone supportive to encourage you or be an accountability partner can really help to stay on track. Be open about your goals and intentions - speak to friends and family, tweet it out, blog about it. Ask for support, pep talks and motivational kicks-up-the-you-know-what.
4. Go easy on yourself
It's perfectly normal to lose motivation, become distracted or doubt the changes you are making. Don't beat yourself up for feeling this way. If you have a 'mishap' don't sweat it or let it throw you off course completely. Dust it off, remember the bigger picture and get back on track.
5. Reward yourself
Break your timeline down into small sections and allow yourself a reward at intervals. For example, if you are looking to lose weight give yourself a reward such as shopping for new clothes, a haircut or an afternoon of watching your favourite films for each milestone you hit.
These are just a few tips, I would love to hear if you have any ideas for staying on track so leave a comment below! I'd also love to know what goals or intentions you have set for yourself in 2015.
