Heart-led Boss Lady - A Branch of Holly

I am super excited today to introduce you to another inspiring and heart-led boss lady - Holly from A Branch of Holly!

Holly is a dreamer who works in marketing. Her business is called A Branch of Holly, where she runs a motivational, creative lifestyle blog. She writes about helping you get to where you want to be and chasing your dreams. When she is not working you can find her browsing social media and cuddling her kitty with a good cup of tea nearby.

Check out the bottom of the interview to find out how to connect with Holly - show her some love in the comments or over on her blog!

1. Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do

I create content to help people get to where they want to be, whether that’s in their life, blog or career. I always embrace a positive, motivated outlook and believe that each one of us has a unique and worthwhile story to tell based on our own skills and experiences. I also like to break down the barriers of blogging and social media. You won’t get any fluff with me, just transparency.

By day, I work for one of the top sixth form colleges in the UK as a Marketing Coordinator. By night, I run my blog and freelance business - A Branch of Holly. I’m fuelled by a sense of community and interaction, and also by sharing my best ideas with my kitty cat, Maisy, which is a regular part of my day!

2. What was your reason for starting your own business? What’s your big ‘why’?

At first, I wanted to start my own side business for all the wrong reasons. Then I went back to the basics of why I started to blog in the first place and that’s when I found my real purpose.

In the past, I struggled a lot in believing I was capable enough and didn’t believe that I could get to where I wanted to be. I didn’t think I could achieve the things I wanted to achieve. But now I’m here. And I think to myself, how many other people out there are in the situation I was in? How many others are feeling that way? So I want to help them, because I know how difficult it can be when you're in that place. I've been there. You feel stuck, you don't know what direction to go in, what's best for you, what to do, where to go or who to go to for help. You don't think you can get there.

That's why I started my blog and business. That's what A Branch of Holly is all about. Now I give that motivation, confidence and help to my readers that I needed myself.

I also understand that people want to be intentional with their time and do things that matter. That's why I offer freelance services, so I can help them do more of what's important.

3. What has surprised you most about being your own boss?

It's actually surprised me how quickly I manage to get things done and also how much I get done in a certain amount of time. I always thought it would take longer to figure things out for myself, but once I created my own schedule on a weekly and daily basis, I adapted to it immediately.

4. What does a typical day look like for you?

Well I’ll go through two typical days here. First with my day job and then without it!

It starts at 6:30am when I get up and get ready for the day. I leave the house at around 8am and take my breakfast with me. When I get into work, I spend the first half an hour checking emails and social notifications from the night before. Then I get on with scheduling content for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and LinkedIn. That usually takes me the best part of the morning!

I usually use my lunch break to work on my blog or business. The tasks I do during this time could differ between writing a blog post, applying for freelance jobs or editing a piece for a client.

After lunch I move onto the website. Currently I'm overhauling all the website content which is proving to be a huge task!

I clock off at 4:30pm, come home, feed the bunnies and Maisy, exercise, make tea and then it's on with business work until around 9pm, depending on how much I have to do.

When I'm off from my day job, I dedicate those days purely to blog and business work. This involves the same pattern, but I'm at home or in the garden working through my priorities: writing blog posts, updating my website, editing photography, updating my services pages, applying for freelance roles and doing freelance work. There are plenty more services I want to add to my portfolio, so watch this space!

5. What 3 words would you use to describe your life and business

Positive, meaningful and inspiring.

6. How do you stay inspired?

For me, being happy in my life is key to staying inspired. If I feel good about things, I find my ideas flow much more easily. I make sure to surround myself with things that I'm interested in and that I enjoy, such as going on walks, reading magazines and seeing the creative projects of others. I'm always thinking how I can adapt these things for my audience. Plus, Pinterest never fails to spark some inspiration in me!

7. What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in business?

Stay true to yourself, remember who you are and remember why you started. Find a group of around four other like-minded people that you can trust, and always share your thoughts and ideas with one another. This is the best way to find support, get feedback and make sure you don't lose your sanity!

8. Finally what is the best thing about being a heart-led entrepreneur?

Knowing that you are doing something for you. Knowing that you're living this life for you and you're living it on your own terms. When you're running your own race, you climb your own ladder. There's no ceiling. That's a pretty amazing feeling to have.

From Gemma - A huge thank you Holly for being here with us today!
