My word of the year + 2018 goals
I'm not one for New Year resolutions but I do like to choose a guiding word at the start of each new year. It's an exercise I've been doing for the last 7 years and every word has taken me on a unique journey. FLOURISH was a huge one, supporting me as I closed the doors to my very first business and changed direction. NURTURE was by my side as I picked up the pieces after leaving my London life behind, and in 2017 ALIVE was my guide.
I should say that I never really choose my word, as they always find me. My word for 2018 was no different - popping up whilst I was mid-flow in the Yoga section of a workshop I was teaching in November. I realised in that moment just how closed and hunched I felt in both body and mind, when what I desired to feel was open and expansive.
And so came my word for 2018...
I love how it can be applied to any area of my life. 2017 was very much a year of collecting myself - gathering thoughts and ideas, letting go of things that no longer felt aligned and stripping back.
The energy at the start of this new year feels very different, and I can see this is a year of unfolding. Of being visible and stepping up. Of creating space.
Yes, I'm ready to unfold.
In addition to a guiding word, I have also carefully selected a few goals this year. Mostly they are focused on living with intention and in tune with the seasons. Another theme is creativity - after several years of building my business, I miss working on projects just for the sake of creating and cultivating joy.
In honour of the fact I turn 34 this year I decided to commit to a couple of special projects, the first being to bake 34 loaves of bread. I used to bake bread weekly until our oven started to fail, and now it's been replaced I'm excited to get back to it.
I love reading but it often takes a back seat, so this year I'm committing to reading 34 books which are not related to my work. Fiction, biographies... let me know if you have any great recommendations!
Part of unfolding, for me, means moving my body more. In the past I've set all sorts of fancy (and frankly unrealistic) goals when it comes to exercising but this year I'm keeping it simple. I'm going to aim to hit all 3 of the activity goals on my Apple watch each day.
This is something I've been wanting to do for years. I've dabbled with a few small pots of tomatoes in the past but I really want to create a thriving veg garden. For me that means mostly growing in the huge planters we bought last summer, and I am a complete newbie when it comes to gardening so it will be interesting to see how it works out! Any tips will be much appreciated!
I'm keeping things super simple with my business this year by focusing on one goal (albeit a pretty big one). I'm not going to share it here just yet as I'm still getting into alignment with exactly what I want to create but it feels so good to have a single point of focus rather than spreading myself too thinly across multiple projects!
I'd love to know what your intentions are for 2018, let me know in the comments!
