Lessons from Yoga

As I wrote yesterday my love affair with Yoga has had it's up's and down's but lately I have been so drawn to my practice.  I feel like I am learning so much through my daily yoga and I have some questions about how I am practicing so thought it might be good to share them here...

How do you find time for Yoga?

I don’t always. Before I started my job and was working from home it was a lot easier – I could take a yoga break in the middle of the day if I wanted to. This week I have been trying something new and have been getting up 30 minutes earlier each day to start the day off with a routine. It’s working and I am loving it!

Do you do the same routine?

I tend to mix my routines up depending on how I feel that day – I am currently working through some Tara Stiles routines and for my morning yoga I have been concentrating on poses for flexibility. If I want to shake things up a bit I will do some strength building poses.

What is your set-up?

I practice yoga in our bedroom – it’s one of my favourite rooms in the house as it has great light. I either follow along to a youtube video or I have a yoga playlist (Enya and Jack Johnson are favourites!) and I will just go with the flow.

What mat do you use?

I recently invested in a new mat as I was previously using a basic exercise mat and wanted something a bit more yoga friendly. I now use the Manuka Eco mat and I love it. It’s light enough to carry about but still comfortable if using on a hard floor and its non-slip surface is great for balance poses.

What about meditation?

I start my yoga routines with 5 minutes of meditation – sometimes this is guided, sometimes not. I have also been working on sneaking meditation into my day, if I am stressed at work I might take some time out on my lunchbreak to meditate/journal.

Things I have learnt from Yoga so far...

  1. That my body is capable of more than I think it is – after only a week of practise my flexibility improves so much
  2. That the days I don’t feel like doing it are the days I need it the most
  3. That is more than just exercise for me – it’s “my time”, space for me to reconnect with myself and turn inward
