Dog roses in the hedgerows
One of my favourite sights in the winter hedgerows is the terrific show of bright red hips from the dog rose, any of which left hanging on eventually get taken by the birds.
Now that we are heading into summer, the flowers of the wild dog rose can be spotted intertwined with the Hawthorne that can graces the hedgerows in my local wetlands. The flash of pink against a lush green backdrop can’t help but lift the spirits.
I spent a couple of hours this morning, savouring the sunshine (after days of rain) and wandering around the wetlands. I’ve missed my daily walks. They nourish me. The sound of the water birds squeaking, the rustle of the breeze in the trees, the air in my lungs - in those moments, nothing else matters.
